Museum of Flight - August 9, 2019

Had a fun day exploring the Museum of Flight at Boeing Field here in Seattle. It’s an impressive collection of warbirds, commercial airliners and historic aircraft.
There was also a special space program exhibit. They have the Apollo 11 command module, Buzz Aldrin’s helmet and gloves as well as lots of other pieces of spaceflight history. Really cool to be able to see everything up close and learn some new details about how NASA was able to pull off something so incredible.
My original plan was to get to Bend, OR tomorrow as I start working my way down the west coast and back to LA. But, weather is looking like an issue, so I'm thinking I'll head towards Eugene, OR which is closer to the coast and doesn't seem like it'll have any thunderstorm activity.
😀👍🏼

I'd hoped to fly the A5 into Boeing Field to visit the museum but once again Seattle weather sunk that plan. I knew there was a lot to see so I didn't want to wait for the weather to (maybe) clear up before heading out.

In addition to all the aircraft and spacecraft they had at the museum, there was also a whole area that shows the history of Boeing and recreated some of the early woodworking shops.

The one display that really caught my attention was a huge collection of 1/72 scale WWII models made by H. Logan Holtgrewe. There were over 400 models, mostly from kits but some were built completely from scratch - and all done in just seven years. That averages out to one model built every SIX DAYS. The level of detail on these models was pretty incredible considering the speed he must've worked at, even using kits. I couldn't even get the whole collection in one shot. It was multiple display cases across two walls.

So, all in all it was a good aviation day, even if there wasn't any actual aviating.
