No Meat and Potatoes today. This was back to using the A5 the way it's meant to be!
I met up with Tobi from @iconaircraft, who’s based here in Miami. We took off from Opa-Locka and headed straight for the Miami shoreline. Did a quick water landing north of the Miami Seaplane base then cruised along the skyline and down to Stiltsville, which is an old prohibition-era community-at-sea out away from the mainland where people went to drink and gamble during the time when that sort of thing was frowned upon. It’s abandoned but still intact. I was amazed that it wasn’t completely destroyed by vandals or something.
We flew up along South Beach, did one more water landing and then headed back to the airport.
The only downside? Had to spend 45 minutes washing the salt water off the plane afterwards. But, a small price to pay for getting a perspective on Miami that few people ever get to see!
After that we dropped by @prestigeimports and @prestige.aviation. I think my head was about to explode seeing that many super cars surrounding an ICON A5. Absolutely amazing place!
😀👍🏼
It was great being able to fly with someone who was familiar with the area and could tell me the local best practices and general lay of the land. That would turn out to be more useful than I realized at the time, when I had to come through this area again on my way north.
Salt water flying sure does make for a long day. The A5 is mostly carbon fiber but there are still a lot of metal pieces and cables that will corrode quickly if they aren't cleaned off. I had to keep this in mind when planning my other flying days along the coast, since not all airports have a wash rack.
Oh, and being able to fold up the wings on the A5 makes it easier to find space at crowded FBOs. I had a few times along the way where an FBO said they didn't have hangar space, but once I folded the wings they were able to make it fit.
By the time we were done washing off the plane we had to hurry over to Prestige Imports for a quick meeting with the team there. Great end to another amazing day.
