Day 50 - Devil's Lake to Havre

Devil's Lake, ND (KDVL) to
Havre, MT (KHVR) - August 3, 2019

Put in a long day today to get from Devil's Lake, ND to Havre, MT. I broke it up with two stops in Williston, ND and Glasgow, MT.
Williston has a booming oil industry and it was strange to see the land evolving from farms to oil fields. Nothing like what I saw in Midland, TX, but it's definitely started to change.
There was some weather coming out of Williston, but it was scattered and easy to get around. I did get the sh!t knocked out of me on the flight from Glasgow over to Havre as the afternoon convection kicked up. Also had a 20 knot headwind that made the fun last even longer. 😒 To top it off, I executed a less-than-elegant landing at Havre, but walked away from it so chalking it up as a success.
Little did I know, I was lucky to get a hotel room. There's a big PowWow here this week, so almost every place was booked. Had to try two different hotels, and I think I got the very last room in town. Also, on an interesting side note, they have Sinclair gas stations here. I know they were big many years ago, but didn't realize they were still around. Love the dinosaur logo!
Tomorrow I'm off to Kalispell. I'll be heading into the mountains and winds can get pretty sporty through there, so planning an early start...again. I'm now on Mountain time, though, so I pick up and extra hour, which will help. Always easier traveling west.
😀👍🏼

This was a fun and challenging weather day. It's easier when the weather is just bad - that pretty much makes the decision whether to fly or not. But, when the weather is marginal or changing quickly you have to really examine the entire route.
Storms don't just form and then move along like a car. They evolve as they move and new storms can pop up. I liked that my ability to anticipate the weather had really improved as I'd progressed through the trip. Like so many things, the more you use it, the better you get.

I didn't spend much time exploring Havre, but it had a sort of old west feel to it - hard to describe exactly what it was that made me feel that way, though.
I walked about half a mile to one restaurant and then had dessert at a diner across the street from my hotel. It had been a long day, and I had to be up and out first thing in the morning, so I crashed pretty early.
