The A5 is still in maintenance, so I was scheduled for a 12:30 flight in a Piper Warrior today to keep my 33 day flying streak going, but a big storm rolled in and shut that idea down. With no good local options, I decided to drive 25 miles north to Fremont Municipal Airport [KFFX]. The weather there was showing clearer skies with winds of 15 knots gusting to 20. Not great, but it’d work for a quick flight.
I met John, the airport manager, and he informed me that their training aircraft was down for maintenance. Crap! Probably should’ve called first, but what the heck, I didn’t have anything else to do on a rainy day. I talked with John for a while hoping that maybe he’d think of another option for me to get airborne. Maybe the local EAA folks were around? No dice, so I went to a nearby restaurant and contemplated toasting the end of my streak. Instead, I took a look at the weather back at Muskegon. The skies had cleared but there were still some strong, gusty winds, so I opted for iced tea instead of beer - hoping that maybe there’d be a last-ditch shot at a flight today.
As if on cue, I got a text from Buster, the flight instructor I was scheduled with earlier. He said the winds were workable and we could go up. I scrambled back to the airport and we did a short flight up the coast of Lake Michigan. It was a little bumpy, but clear skies and a great view.
Big thanks to @busterbed for the last-minute, Hail Mary call.
The streak survives another day!
